OAE Education Director and oboe player, Cherry Forbes, updates us on what’s happening up in Yorkshire.
We’re on to day 4 of our project in Beverley, East Yorkshire, inspired by Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and what a whirlwind it has been. Take 22 lads from Beverley Grammar school, 150 primary pupils, students from the University of York, the Consone Quartet, harpsichordist Chris Bucknall, violinist Hetty Wayne, me, and brilliant composer James Redwood and I think we’re onto a winner…
We’ve already learnt the Sailor’s Chorus and Fear No Danger from the opera, created an instrumental storm, written two new songs (Hold onto Hope and Lost Without Love), found out about the OAE and created a fanfare to herald the witches. And it is only Thursday. Today we meet our last school and will be composing our final song to tell how the witches plan to cause mischief.
Tomorrow we will put everyone together and perform two concerts on the opening day of the Beverley Early Music Festival and so far we have sold over 300 tickets. I for one can’t wait, so wish us luck! Even better, if you’re in the East Riding tomorrow (Friday 27th May) at 5pm or 6.30pm do come and join us at Beverley Grammar School.
I am passionate about the power of music and this collaboration between OAE Education, the National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) and our partners in Beverley feels like a very special collaboration indeed.
